When Correction Is Correct

Have you ever been frustrated when someone corrects you? How do you tend to handle it? What if the someone is God?

Proverbs 3 provides a wonderful example of fatherly advice on how to handle correction. It unfolds like a roadmap that the father has already marked for his son. The father even mentions various pitfalls his son would encounter if he strays from the course. This is a picture of wisdom and love producing the well-being that any parent would want for their child!

We can often find out the true character of our heart by our response to correction. One purpose of the Bible itself is to correct us. Whether we turn to the Word of God or turn away from it is up to us. The consequence of our response, however, is not.

When correction comes our way, one good thing to do is to consider the condition of our heart. If we fail to apply the same measure to ourselves that we do to others, we may have a “blind spot” in our lives.

If we wish to see more growth and maturity in our lives, we will sooner or later have to learn how to handle correction.
