When we hear the word “steadfast,” we should think of a state of being certain or firmly established. Imagine this scenario. The navigator wishes to move from point A to point B. The compass reveals a specific direction of travel for the navigator. The fixed path, the securely determined path, is a steadfast course. There may be obstacles between points A and B; however, the location of point B does not change. The course of our lives very often resembles this example, complete with pitfalls, minefields, furious storms, and venomous creatures blocking our intended path!
What are some strategies we can employ to remain steadfast today, whether our decisions are related to finances, health, morality, spirituality, or other areas? How can we maintain a steady course, or recognize the need to get back on course? What tools encourage our steadfastness today?
Let’s briefly consider a few words from the Scriptures on this issue:
Psalm 51:10
Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Psalm 112:6-8
Surely the righteous will never be shaken;
they will be remembered forever.
They will have no fear of bad news;
their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.
Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear;
in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.
You will keep in perfect peace
Isaiah 26:3-4
those whose minds are steadfast,
because they trust in you.
Trust in the Lord forever,
for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal.
1 Peter 5:8-9
Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
