Lessons Learned: Intro

Many years ago, we undertook an adventure through the Bible via a study called Disciple. It taught us many truths that still impact us today. I have decided that it may be worthwhile to revisit some of those “aha” moments again to see how I have grown and what I should have figured out by now. The first topic I shall review is insight gained on the Authority of the Bible.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NLT)

The Bible is God’s self communication. In it, we can find all we need to know in order to live well. Anyone can read this book! We should come expecting what it has to give. We should treat it as a revelation, not a puzzle. We should read with an open heart and an inquiring mind.

The Bible helps us know who we are. It helps us know whose we are. It helps us know what God wants us to do.

My impressions at the time were that God is present for every generation. People fade. God does not. Noticing the many books within the Bible, there are so many different times, yet all say the same things about God. In any language, the Word has power.

OUR HUMAN CONDITION

“Inside me is this persistent longing to reach out to Someone; this desire to know if God has anything to do with me, to say to me; this need to know if the Bible has any power to offer me.”

Disciple

The theme of that first lesson was that disciples place themselves under the power and authority of Scripture.

The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous signs in addition to the ones recorded in this book. But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.

John 20:30-31 (NLT)

Reflection

  • How was the Bible put together?
  • How do we read the Bible?
  • What forms of writing are in the Bible?
  • Why study the Bible?
