Combating “I” Disease

  • The first and great commandment
  • The second commandment
  • All the law and the prophets

Lately, I have been pondering these topics, with what they say and Who says them to us. We have viewed them in worship and also privately considered them.
In class, we have followed a parallel track, unbeknownst to me. In our recent studies, we have witnessed the fallout that occurs (for individuals, communities, and even nations) when people miss the mark on these two commandments.

Two acts reveal themselves through the Biblical pages: Idolatry and Injustice.
We watched as “I” disease first put distance between God and His people, how it consequently put distance between the people, and how it ultimately put distance between the people and the Promised Land.

I have been wondering! Is “I” disease not a threat today? How would I know if I had bad I’s? Who could heal this “I” disease? Where am I headed with two bad I’s?
If such personification is merely academic, then the verbal meandering is inconsequential. It is then only amusing, like watching a kitten at play.
If, however, Idolatry and Injustice are still potent, I question how seriously I have taken their threat to me, to the community, to the nation, and to the generations beyond us.

Wasn’t there a community in Revelation that bragged about having good eyes? What if we today have two bad I’s? Would we want to know? Would we accept the diagnosis? Would we believe the proposed treatment?

Is vision today at risk because of “I” disease?
